Thanks to a generous donation from the Order of the Southern Cross, a non-profit dedicated to historic preservation in the South, we have an opportunity to repair and restore the Tennessee Confederate Infantry Monument at the Chickamauga Battlefield. For many years, the bronze figure has been missing the barrel and buttstock of it’s musket, and a significant crack has developed in the stone base that needs urgent repair.
NPS Chief of Resources, Jim Szyjkowski, worked with a regional restoration firm to determine an estimated cost of $13,500. The grant we’ve received will cover two-thirds of that cost, but we need another $4,500 to completely restore the monument!
A recent project to restore the Ohio Monument included a fundraising drive by 5th graders from Reynoldsburg, OH, who traveled to the CCNMP to learn about Ohio’s role in the Civil War and donate their hard-earned funds in person. If you know of a Tennessee school group that may be interested in adopting this monument repair, please put them in touch with the Friends of the Park!
Every donation to the Tennessee Confederate Infantry Monument will be matched 2 to 1 by the grant award! Click HERE to make a secure gift online, or checks can be sent to Friends of the Park, PO Box 748, Chattanooga, TN 37401. Please be sure to designate your gift for Monument Repair!
